Kidrobot continues to showcase the very best in pop culture by infusing iconic brands with their designer toy expertise. The latest crossover products celebrate the Playboy brand. Released yesterday (10.9), the two products have very different vibes –The Paul Pope piece seems to be naturally targeted at Playboy fans and collectors while the PEECOL feels squarely aimed at the designer toy market.
Miss November 1978 by indie comic star Paul Pope, immortalizes Monique St. Pierre’s provocative yet mysterious cover pose. Paul was provided an archive of all the Playboy covers and chose Monique’s because of her “radical pose” and her “rad boots”. His design is very faithful to the original photograph. The main stylistic change here is that the figure has much fuller hair which frames her mask nicely. The figure is a striking piece that would probably be at home in a handsome den on a bookshelf with other mainstream collectibles. On the other hand, it would likely look slightly out-of-place in a display filled with say Dunnys. (M!)

If there’s a more prolific commercially successful vinyl customizer out there than Huck Gee, I have yet to meet him/her. Because of his overwhelming popularity, his limited-edition customs sell out on eBay in ridiculously quick fashion – often in as little as ten seconds.
To increase collectors’ success of purchasing his customs, Huck is taking two steps – first he’s going to track and ban aggressive resellers of his customs and ban them from future custom sales. He’s also going to occasionally go with a slightly-expanded run (20 rather than his standard 10). Peep Huck’s blog for the finer details.

So while we’re all anxiously awaiting the summer ‘cons (SDCC, TTF and STCC), we’re also looking towards Fall for the release of Kidrobot’s Dunny Series 5. Behance Magazine recently interview Kidrobot founder Paul Budnitz and a shot of four S5 Dunnys was included in the photo gallery. Now the fun begins. The one on the left is clearly from Taiwanese street artist Reach. Directly to the right is another that looks familiar yet we’ve got at least a few names bouncing around in her head. The other two? Guesses ?

The great folks of Jinxed bring together two wonderful artists for an awesome looking show. Mr. Shane Jessup and Tim DIET will be brining some fabulous canvases and customs to the people of
Philadelphia. MSJ will have a few custom 8” Dunny’s including a familiar face from Series 4. That’s right MSJ is bringing back the lucky cat in two colors, Gold and Black in 8” form. Also brining the goodies Tim DIET will be brining back those classic cartoon characters we all grew up with and loved. A mix of Casper, Richie Rich, Beagle Boys, and Mr. Monopoly brought into one piece sure would look like a hit T.V. series to me. This show will be on Friday, July 25th from 7-10PM at Jinxed.
